César Ugarte Jensen
César is of Peruvian/Norwegian descent. He received his design degree in Peru, then moved first to New York City in the 60’s and then to the United Kingdom, where he received a philosophy degree from Cambridge. In 1972 he moved to Spain and started tooling beautiful leather bags, belts and travel cases which he sold from his shop in Palma de Mallorca.
In 1976 he moved to Gstaad, Switzerland and opened a boutique; it was here that his leather creations began to give him a name in the fashion world. He became known for belts, handbags, shoes, suitcases made of exotic skins such as snake, crocodile, and Java lizard, embellished with fossils, feathers, embroidery and ebony.
His boutique was visited by the likes of Princesses Grace, Caroline and Diana; Peter Sellers, Roger Moore, Julie Andrews, Elizabeth Taylor, Liza Minnelli, Joan Collins, Gina Lollobrigida and Rod Stewart. He became friends with Peter Sellers. Cher has several of his creations, and some of his belts and guitar straps can be seen in Johnny Cash’s museum and across the shoulder of Carlos Santana. Some of his more complex and extraordinary pieces are on display in museums in Zurich and Barcelona.
César moved back to Peru in the early 90’s and learned the art of gold and silver crafting, which resulted in the creation of stunning sterling silver buckles that compliment his leather belts.
In 2010 he began a new venture in a restaurant in Lima called César Restaurante, which became known for both delicious cuisine and the artistry of its presentation.
A restaurant review on the internet resulted his marriage to Anong, an American whose parents lived in Thailand when she was born. They had met in Spain 42 years earlier, but had lost touch with each other until Anong saw the review. You can read the entire story in Anong's book, "At Last". César moved to Albuquerque and began creating his new leather collection in 2014. He is the happiest when his hands are making his fantasies come alive.
